checkpoint charlie finally

Yeah I´m such a tourist, but I wanted to see it!! took a bunch of pictures too. All this time I´ve been in Berlin I never observed east vs west. Even east berlin now is......well....I guess I´d have to see more.
It´s worth a visit here. A friend told me how he was here while the wall was still here and got drunk in east berlin and passed out at checkpoint charlie. He said he was here around midnight at, what did he say, the center of the world, something like that, and there was no one around. Then he passed out and somehow ended up on a train in Holland.....with Russian writing on it, and he thought he had been kidnapped and sent east. what a dingbat.....
There were monuments to all the people who died trying to escape. Still, this whole story of the wall is a mystery to me......and the fact that my country the US had so much to do with it.....well it´s hard to think about. But I really don´t understand. ......?????

Hey Laura,

if you're still in Berlin and you want to learn more about the cold war period, there's 2 museums you should check out:
* Gedenkstätte Normanstrasse (aka the stasi museum) in the old stasi headquarters, in Lichtenberg if I recall correctly
* the Story of Berlin: it offers a lot of insight in Berlin's entire history, and includes a guided visit to a nuclear bomb shelter, which has a very eerie atmosphere; it's on Kurfürstendamm, in Charlottenburg

Aah Berlin ... if only I could be there now!

Cheers,
Karlien
